Focused on meeting the apparel industry’s growing demand for responsible sourcing options that can meet both performance and environmental standards, Functional Fabric Fair recently completed its Portland Spring 2025 edition that boasted a 9% bump in attendance across a 30% larger exhibition floor showcasing the latest trends in textile development for the apparel industry.
Owned and managed by RX, the Spring show, which took place April 14-16 at Oregon Convention Center, attracted 2,700 attendees and more than 320 exhibitors spanning 50,192 square feet. In 2024, the event drew 2,100 attendees and more than 260 exhibitors to a 38,650-square-foot show floor.
The larger and more robust show connected apparel executives, product developers, designers, and sourcing professionals from major performance and athletic brands such as Adidas, Patagonia, REI, Nike, Vuori and many more.

Held biannually in Portland, Ore., as well as annually in New York City, Functional Fabric Fair offers expert-led education, supplier recommendations, and a university program that exposes students to textile and apparel developers.
“Functional Fabric Fair is the must-attend event for apparel CEOs, designers and sourcing professionals looking to explore the latest in outdoor, activewear and lifestyle performance textiles,” said Steve McCullough, vice president of Functional Fabric Fair. “Each edition is about more than sourcing—it’s about shaping the future of performance textiles.
An Expanded and On-Trend Show Floor
The show's expanded exhibit hall featured 320 vetted sustainable-certified suppliers who not only had a chance to engage and do business with serious buyers but also each other.
“Functional Fabric Fair gives us an opportunity to have a lot of meetings and not only with other suppliers we work with, but also a lot of brand and designer meetings,” said Exhibitor John Holiday with YKK USA. “We got a lot done in a short amount of time.”

Attendee Cassia Lewis Cameron senior material developer at Patagonia shared how much the event has become an invaluable part of her sourcing calendar.
“Boasting some of the most advanced and sustainable suppliers in our industry, the pre-vetted supplier base saves us countless hours in qualification processes – providing direct access to innovation partners we can trust, even when global logistics present challenges,” Cameron said.
Between supplier meetings, attendees had a chance to explore a wide range of immersive, informative, and tactile sourcing and product discovery in specialized areas designed to foster meaningful connections between suppliers and brands while providing attendees with crucial market intelligence and hands-on experience with innovative materials. These areas included:
AATCC Textile Test Zone, featuring live testing demonstrations that provided insights into standardized fabric evaluations
Bodywear Collective, a new area showcasing the latest fabrications for underwear, swimwear, shapewear, wellness, and seamless activewear in addition to a Smoothie Bar for refreshments
Innovation Zone, spotlighting emerging technologies and next-gen materials
Wool Forum, a new section underscoring wool’s performance and sustainability benefits
Sustainability Lounge, a new hub for sustainable material innovations and collaborations
Trend Forum, highlighting 12 essential fabric categories curated with a sustainability lens
Outdoor Recreation Archive, celebrating the history and evolution of outdoor apparel in partnership with Utah State University
Media Lounge, a place to recharge and connect with influential media
Italian Bar, a space to connect and enjoy Italian delights

McCullough shared the event also boasted full exhibitor retention, despite economic uncertainties and trade challenges, underscoring the show’s essential role in the sustainable performance textile industry.
“In today’s economic and supply chain uncertainty, Functional Fabric Fair maintained 100% exhibitor participation in addition to attendee growth, emphasizing the event’s essential and valuable role in the industry,” he said. “Supply chain resilience and relationship solidification emerged as critical themes this edition, with brands leveraging their time to secure partnerships with trusted suppliers for their Spring 2026/2027 collections.”
In-Demand Education
Spread over three days, the event featured a comprehensive menu of educational programming providing insights into the latest trends, technologies, case studies, and sustainability solutions.
This year, the sold-out Day 0 Sustainability Workshop, held the day before the exhibit hall opened, experienced a robust audience of more than 230 industry professionals, an uptick from 2024. The workshop provided actionable insights on material traceability, addressing a critical business need as brands face increasing regulatory and consumer pressure regarding supply chain transparency, with attendees participating in in-depth presentations and discussions.

“The Day 0 workshop sparked critical conversations that will influence how our industry approaches innovation and accountability,” McCullough said. “It brought together the voices, discussions and ideas that will lead us into the future.”
During expo days, attendees had the opportunity to participate in more than 10 Expert Talks sessions on the show floor, led by apparel thought leaders addressing the latest developments in the textile industry.
Special Events and Networking Opportunities
Alongside a carefully curated marketplace and industry-led education, textile industry professionals and students gathered to make valuable business connections, learn about new resources, and gain inspiration at several special events and activations, including:
Design Lab Live, which featured sustainable designer and Project Runway alum Kelley Dempsey, who crafted a one-of-a-kind jacket live using materials from exhibitors FLYTEC, Pontetorto and YKK

Looking Back – and Ahead
Since launching in 2018, Functional Fabric Fair has witnessed an astonishing seven-year growth journey that has transformed the event from a single show into the industry’s premier sustainable textile platform, with three editions planned across Portland and NYC in 2025, along with a new Winter Orlando edition in early 2026 that will be collocated with the PGA Show, said McCullough.
“Our evolution reflects Functional Fabric Fair’s commitment to deeply understanding this specialized community, and we’ve consistently invested in curating only the highest-quality sustainable performance materials, creating meaningful educational programming, and fostering the right connections that matter most to product developers.” McCullough said. “What’s made us a must-attend fixture in the industry calendar isn’t just market timing, but our focus on sustainability and quality over quantity, ensuring every participant finds genuine value whether they’re exhibiting innovative materials or sourcing for their next collection.”
Up next in the Functional Fabric Fair series is New York Summer, taking place July 21-23 at Javits Center; Portland Fall, returning November 11-13 to the Oregon Convention Center; and the launch of Orlando Winter, scheduled for Jan. 21-22, 2026, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
