In the heart of Washington D.C., the Exhibitions & Conferences Alliance’s Legislative Action Day unfolded, a pivotal event resonating throughout the trade show industry. Trade Show News Network was on the ground to witness and report on advocacy efforts held on Thursday, May 29.

We interviewed ECA Executive Vice President Tommy Goodwin who provided an overview of the day.

A Record-Breaking Gathering

The excitement was palpable as ECA Executive Vice President Tommy Goodwin shared the impressive turnout—170 participants from 30 states, making this the largest Legislative Action Day to date. With about 120 meetings scheduled, covering almost a quarter of Congress, the event highlighted the breadth of representation from across the nation. Notably, more than 50% of attendees were first-timers, bringing fresh energy and perspectives to Capitol Hill.

The Focus: Taxes, Talent, and Tariffs

At the core of this day were discussions on the industry’s pressing issues, packaged into what Goodwin coined as the "three Ts": taxes, talent, and tariffs. These topics underscore areas where government intervention is crucial, from tax policy adjustments to workforce development initiatives. The complexities of tariffs, a contentious point due to recent legal decisions, further amplified the need for dialogue with Congress.

Legislative Advancements and Challenges

Goodwin provided critical insights into recent legislative actions affecting the industry, including the House of Representatives passing laws encompassing tax reforms and workforce development expansions. The industry welcomed provisions like the expansion of the Pell Grant program, aimed at bolstering the skilled workforce. However, uncertainties around tariffs continue to pose challenges, underscoring the importance of ECA's advocacy efforts.

A Unified Voice for the Industry

A key aspect of the day was the collective effort of all ECA alliance partners and industry associations. This unity ensures a powerful, singular voice representing diverse facets of the trade show industry. Goodwin emphasized the significance of sharing personal stories with policymakers, transforming statistics into compelling narratives that can impact legislative change.

An Invitation for Future Participation

For those who missed this year’s event, Legislative Action Day offers an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with policy-makers. Goodwin extended an open invitation for next year, assuring prospective attendees of a supportive environment. The structured itinerary promotes meaningful interactions with state representatives, concluding with networking opportunities at Capitol Hill’s storied venues.

Personal Stories: The Heart of Advocacy

Goodwin stressed that personal experiences from the show floor can profoundly influence legislators. While data-driven arguments are crucial, it is these individual stories from industry stakeholders that truly resonate. By participating, attendees have the power to shape the industry’s future, advocating for policies that foster growth and stability.
